Beijing police practice high speed chases

To my knowledge there haven’t been many high speed chases required surrounding Olympic events, but if there are any at the 2008 Olympics, Beijing police will be ready. They are taking special training since Beijing’s usual attrocious traffic makes a high speed chase pretty much impossible.

Quincy Jones wants to write the theme song

Quincy Jones has said he would like to write the 2008 Olympic Games theme song, citing his love of the country. China said, basically, “Thanks. Feel free to submit to our official competition.” I think that’s kind of funny. A Grammy award winning legend in the music world comes to you and offers to write a song for you for free, and you tell him he’s no better than anyone else— get in line.

Australia set to send a record number of athletes

Beijing will be the biggest Olympics ever— for Australian athletes. The current estimate is 496 athletes. And, in case you’re wondering how much it costs to send an Olympic team to the Olympics, it will cost Australia right at 25 million for the four year cycle leading up to the Games.

U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program

I had no idea that such a thing existed, and I bet most of you didn’t either. The U.S. Army has an assignment for potential Olympians. And they have a pretty good record of qualifying Olympians, as well.

Will BMX be the next snowboarding?

Snowboarding seemed like an odd idea for an Olympic sport— well, at least to me it did, but it turned out to be one of the most interesting and exciting sports of the 2006 Olympics. The competitors were fresh-faced, excited, had a good time… they were everything that I want to see from an Olympian.

BMX has been added to the 2008 summer Olympics. Will it be the summer Olympics’ snowboarding? It’s a similar culture. So, who will be the Flying Tomato of BMX? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Shooting range Construction Stopped for the 2008 Olympic Games

Ancient tombs were found where they were working on putting in the shooting ranges for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Archaeologists believe that the tombs were built in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).

This a pretty interesting glitch to run into. I wonder if any other Olympic game construction has been held up by an archeological discovery. Anyway, you can read the full story in the Shanghai daily.
