While in Beijing, be sure not to miss out on Uyghur food. The Uyghur are a Muslim minority that live in Xinjiang , a province in the north west of China. Beijing offers a great variety of different local foods, and Uyghur food is one of my favorites. The Uyghur cuisine uses ingredients that are not commonly found in Chinese dishes, such as cumin, lamb meat, and lots of tomatoes. If you’re just looking for a snack, I can really recommend getting nan bread and chuanr (skewers, usually made with lamb meat).

You should definitely try it while you’re in Beijing. Going to an Uyghur restaurant is probably also the best way to ensure that your food does not contain lard, which is commonly used in most Chinese restaurants.
