Hot on the heels of the new figure skating scoring system, gymnastics is also implementing a new scoring system. Similar to the skating system, there will be a difficulty score and an execution score. The new system was used for its first competition at last weekend’s American Cup in Philadelphia. Two Texans won the international competition.

I’m friggin mad about the way they changed the scoring system. The old way was simple and basic. I think this is totally messed up. Ugh..and like now they only get one vault and they have a certain area they have to land in. It is messed up. This is not the gymnastics I know and Love. This is totally twisted. The old way was scored fairly. The whole difficulty score is completely wack.
Why don’t you tell us how you really feel?
I didn’t like the effects that the new scoring system had on ice skating, so I doubt I’ll like the new gymnastics system, either. Is that just because I don’t like change, or is it really a problem?
I disagree. The old system had a lot of flaws, to the point that no one who did not already understand the system could watch and have a real understanding of where the score came from. Just try explaining the old system, including A,B,C skills, requirements, bonus, and all the rest to someone who knows nothing about the sport. Then try the new one. The basics of it make a lot more sense.
As for the vault area – that was already in the Code. Certain vaults were supposed to land in certain areas. The good gymnasts were just good enough that it didn’t matter.
This system means that we now have a way – call it fair or unfair – to compare a watered down but technically perfect routine with a daredevil routine with bobbles but amazing difficulty. It may push the level of gymnastics even farther than it is right now.
And if you claim the old way was scored fairly – have you ever done gymnastics competitively?!? Every meet I was ever in, I or one of my fellow gymnasts complained about how unfair this judge or that judge is. Scoring will be (I think) more transparent this way.
as a former gymnast and now a competitive coach i am very excited to see how the new scoring system will benefit the sport of gymnastics. the old scoring was very unfair and frustrating and i think it is great
i think that the new scoring system is horrible
it completely eliminates the strive for the perfection of getting a 10.0
and now nadia and all others who have recieved 10’s in the past will not matter
