North and South Korea are scheduled to meet to determine whether the two countries will put together a unified Olympic team for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Although the countries have marched together under a unified flag several times in recent years, they have always had individual squads competing.
In their bid for the 2008 Summer Olympics, Beijing promised that the Olympic torch would cross Mount Everest. Now, in an effort to insure that happens, a torch will actually make the climb this year. The specially designed torch will be carried by a group of eighty trained mountaineers and televised live. This crossing will be the highest the Olympic torch has ever been carried. The final route for the Olympic torch should be finalized early in 2007. The Olympic torch’s journey to the Beijing Olympics starts in March of 2008 in Athens, Greece.
